South Coast Writers Centre was formed
when a number of local writing groups from the Illawarra started
working together to set up a resource for writers. The groups
approached the NSW Government for funds to establish a Writers
Centre. Wollongong City Council supported this initiative
by offering premises in the old Town Hall building. Samantha
Wild was appointed as Director of the Centre, and began work
on renovating the premises with two young designers and a
group of volunteers. After much cleaning, sanding, painting,
constructing and fitting out, the Centre was ready for the
offical open conducted by writer Kate Llewellyn in September
1997. Founding President Ron Pretty cut the cake at the gala
event.
Since then, the South Coast Writers Centre has presented
workshops and readings, hosted book launches and writing groups,
and developed innovative programs for writers and communities
on the South Coast.
