Life Writing workshop with Rae Luckie - Eden

Rae Luckie is an extraordinarily generous and committed writer whose main interest is helping people to preserve their life stories. Rae shows workshop participants how to get their writing flowing, so that they can tell the stories of their own lives and record precious family stories. Join Rae for a one day workshop on Life Writing that will inspire or energise your life writing project.

What you will need for this workshop
Bring writing materials: smooth writing paper and a comfortable pens or pencils and a photograph with a tree in the foreground or background about which you would like to write. Bring your own lunch, tea and coffee will be supplied.

About Rae Luckie
 Rae is currently a lecturer in education at University of Wollongong’s Batemans Bay Campus. She has 12 years as a creative writing teacher and mentor and specialises in community projects. She teaches creative writing at University of Wollongong’s Shoalhaven Campus summer session. Community projects include: Once Upon a Time in Mosman: Intergenerational Biography Project for Schools (for Mosman Council Library); Kirrawee Stories (for Planning NSW Living Centres Program); Epicorma (Kiama Crisis Resource Project); Kiama Stories (Kiama Council Cultural Grant); Searching for Memories: Return to the Burma-Thai Railway. Mentorship/editing projects include: Metaphysically Blue (Geraldine Fennell);Suzannah’s Gold (Carol Preston); Bluebells and Cherry Blossom:A Kentish Childhood (Joy Bedson); Quirky Tales and Tidbits (Enid McLean); Mission Doctor to the New Hebrides (Dr Ted Freeman). Rae has judged short story writing competitions for Port Macquarie and Shoalhaven FAW. Her work has been published in: What Is Mother Love (2008) edited by Selwa Anthony (Penguin); Illness in the Academy (2007) edited by Kimberley Myers (Purdue University Press);Best Australian Stories 2004 edited by Frank Moorhouse (Black Inc); Stories from the Shed(1996) edited by Mark Thomson (Angus and Robertson); three works in No Thanks or Regrets(1996) edited by Jacqueline Kent; and Queen of Crime 2001 (winning entry) edited by Del Mutton. Among My Souvenirs was broadcast on Radio National in 2006.

Poetry workshop with Susan Hampton - Batemans Bay
SCWC PROGRAM

Please bring with you 15 copies of 3 pages of your poems/writing. In this workshop we'll explore working with imagery, and the concept of point of view in poetry. We'll look at techniques for making your poems stronger and more memorable. We will workshop a few pages from each person.

Susan Hampton is an award-winning poet, an experienced teacher of poetry and a highly skilled editor of creative work. Explore your skills as a poet in this one day workshop. Susan’s work has been praised by critics for being characterised by "warmth, sensitivity and wit” and she also brings these qualities to her poetry workshops.

About Susan Hampton

Susan Hampton lives in Canberra and has written six books of poems. Her latest book News of the Insect World came out from Five Islands Press in November 2009. Her previous book The Kindly Ones was shortlisted for five awards, and won The Judith Wright Poetry Prize for 2006. Some of her poems are available at www.foxediting.com.
 
Susan works as a poetry and fiction editor and as a trainer document writing. She has received grants from ACT ARTS and the Literature Board of the Australia Council. Her poetry is featured in the National Museum’s Eternity Exhibition, and her work has been broadcast on ABC radio’s “Poetica".  
 
She taught creative writing, drama, journalism and literature at universities from 1981–2000, and has been Writer-in-Residence at ANU, UC, ADFA, UNE, Darwin and Wollongong Universities. In 2004 Susan taught a series of online writing courses for the ACT Writers Centre, and she has tutored at the Summer School in Poetry at Wollongong University for four years.

Non-fiction writing workshop with Jeff Apter - Pambula

Jeff Apter will share his experience as a professional writer and his insights into the craft of non-fiction writing, from how to select the right topic to research, and how to write and prepare manuscripts for publication.

About Jeff Apter
Jeff Apter is one of Australia's foremost writers of non-fiction. In a career spanning more than 20 years he has written 10 commercially and critically well-received biographies. His books include studies of Silverchair, the Cure and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jeff Buckley, Keith Urban and test cricketer Michael Slater. Jeff's latest projects include a biography of the Finn brothers, Neil and Tim and a co-writing project with Kasey Chambers, due in 2011 through Harper Collins.

Jeff has contributed to such publications as Rolling Stone (where he spent five years as Music Editor), the Sydney Morning Herald and GQ. Jeff is the Music Contributor to Australian Vogue and was the music reviewer for The Bulletin for many years. For more info, see http://www.jeffapter.com.au.

Getting Started in Theatre Writing with Timothy Daly - Bermagui
SCWC PROGRAM

This practical, hands-on workshop will both allow you to try your hand at writing for theatre, as well as showing you over 30 practical writing techniques that work well in theatre writing. Other aspects covered will be: the differences between theatre writing and novel or short story writing; the differences between theatre writing and film writing; dramatic structure and how to use plot in theatre writing.
Suitable for both beginners in theatre writing and for those with some theatre-writing experience.

About Timothy Daly
Timothy Daly is a playwright, teacher and dramaturg, with numerous national and international productions of his plays. These include Kafka Dances, Livingstone, Complicity and The Private Visions of Gottfried Kellner, which won the 2000 Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE for Best Australian Play. In 2006, Derrida In Love enjoyed a sell-out season at the Ensemble Theatre. Timothy has also written extensively for radio; his plays have been broadcast in seven countries. Outlanders, co-written with Peter Garrett, won the 2001 AWGIE for Best New Radio Play.

Until 2002, Timothy was Dramaturg-in-residence (Script Adviser) at the Australian National Playwrights’ Centre, and is in constant demand as a teacher of writing, having conducted numerous courses and workshops in Australia and overseas. He advises on over 100 scripts and productions a year. His play Kafka Dances has become one of the most internationally-performed Australian plays of the last three decades, having won over 20 national and international awards. Its most recent performance was a sold-out season in Paris, in March-April 2008, and again in December 2008. After a sold-out season at the Festival of Avignon, in July 2009,Kafka Dances returned to Paris in November 2009 for a season at the prestigious Theatre de l’Ouest Paris.

In May 2008, Timothy's most recent play, The Man in the Attic, won Australia’s most prestigious award for a new play, the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award. The first American performance was in April 2009. A French production of the play will take place in 2010, with a five-theatre co-production across France.
